DEVELOPMENT STRIDES IN DELTA AS UDUAGHAN COMMISSIONS HOSPITAL BUILDING.

Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel  Eweta Uduaghan Thursday,13^th February,2014 at the Commissioning of the Maternal and Child Care Complex  as well as other projects at the Warri Central Hospital,Warri attributed the cause of
maternal and child death to poverty and ignorance.

Governor Uduaghan, also a former Commissioner for Health in the state
said the state government has been able to deal squarely with the
issue of poverty through the provision of medical facilities in the
state Health sector.
While calling on pregnant women to "conform to basic maternal rules
and hygiene neccessary for their safe delivery by not subjecting
themselves to "quacks", Dr.Uduaghan  stated that his administration is doing its best to
tackle the level of ignorance on the part of pregnant women who often times
visits trado-medical doctors for their deliveries instead of the
conventional medical personnels.

The Governor also advised  Pregnant women to always visit the
maternal and child complex of  the Central Hospital,Warri for family
planning,registeration and for deliveries  in the
hospital as well keep the hospital clean stressing that hygiene starts
from their "kitchens and bedrooms."

Dr. Uduaghan who boasted that the Warri Central Hospital has the
facilities for the safe deliveries of the pregnant women said the
hospital has the capacity to accommodate at least 100 patients at a
time.

Chief Medical Director of the Central Hospital,Warri, Dr. Kingsley
Agholor said the old facilities in the hospital has not been
abandoned. He explained that the with the new building the Hospital’s Paediatricians and Obstericians are now under one
roof and it also brings the Special Care Baby Unit closer to the Labour Ward as
well as the Theatre. He said the MCC has a state of the art Radiological Unit
equipped  with an x-ray and ultra sound scan machines. The has led to improved
aesthetic value of the Central Hospital,Warri,.He further explained that the old facility
could sit about 80 women comfortably and with two beautiful holding areas that
has the capacity  to contain the Ante Natal Care, ANC, daily attendance among others.
Dr. Agholor said in 2008 a total of about 26,253 attendance was
recorded, a year, after free maternal programme was introduced while a
total of 3,367 babies were delivered. He explained that if compared with
data from 2006 which reveal a total ANC attendance of 14,022 and a
total delivery of 2,261 babies it was an improvement which shows the state government is working.In subsequent years,Agholor said, witnessed a
rise  such that in 2013, the total ANC attendance was
33,314(42%increase in ANC from 2006) and a total delivery of about
4,512(50.1% increase in delivery rate from 2006). Dr. Agholor noted
that access to paeditric (0-5years) care also increased with an average
paediatric daily consultation of 250 children as against the total
paediatric consultation put at 26,019 in 2008, the total  number of
children  seen in the hospital in 2013 was 53,396 saying by contrast,
the total number of children seen in 2006 was 18,705(35%increase in
paediatric access).

Delta State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Sisanmi Otumara said the
project is designed to save lives with tertiary level care. The former
three time Warri South Council boss also said the commissioning of
Delta State Ambulance Service is to cater specially for traffic
accident victims adding that eight hospitals within the state has been
selected for the purpose. They include, Central
Hospital,Warri , Agbarho,Ughelli,Eku,Sapele,Agbor and Asaba Central Hospitals.

A Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government
Area of Delta State, Tuesday 11^th February,2014 directed the Nigeria Police Force to take
back the charges it preferred against  Mr. Omes
Ogedegbe,a Lawyer and 29 others for amendment before bringing back the said
charges  before the court and that it  must contain the appropriate charges and bring back the
accused persons in a later  date.

In his ruling, Magistrate of the Court, Chief Magistrate.O.Aforkeya
said "the court has the powers to look into the police case file
moreso that it is now notorious of the police in incriminating
accused persons".
 Chief Magistrate Aforkeya noted that the court has the jurisdiction
to entertain the matter brought before it citing several instances.

Earlier,the Coordinator of the Forum for  Justice and Human Rights
Defence, Barr.Oghenejabor Ikimi  and team of fifteen other lawyers raised a
preliminary objection on count 6 in the charge sheet brought before the
court to commit the accused to life imprisonment. While describing the
charge in count 6 as "Holden," Barr. Ikimi argued that the charge raised
against the accused is smuggled in to punish the accused submitting
that "Holden" as a charge is an unknown law presently in the Nigerian
system citing several sections of the constitution. Barr.Ikimi
appealed to the court to look into the police case file with a view
to determining if the allegations laid against the accused persons are
correct. He pointed out that the police have no evidence to support
the charge urging the court to strike out count 6 in the charge with
his inherent powers.

Police Prosecutor,ASP. S.B.Irabor, argued that "Holden" is known to law
in Nigeria adding that the court cannot look at one of the charges and
leave the others citing Cap 21,2006 which is also applicable to Delta
State. ASP Irabor further argued that the court cannot try the accused
persons saying the court should remand them in prison custody and
refer the case file to the Department of Public Prosecution,DPP, for
directives. ASP Irabor said the court cannot go into the file and make
any decision citing section 76 of the criminal code laws of Delta
State which according to him is known to law. He alleged that the
accused persons on Monday February 10,2014 assembled at the Ebrumede
police station attempting to raise down the station.

The Director of the College of Education Nursery and Primary
School,Warri,Mr.P.U.Okoro has attributed the poor record of Nigeria in
sports at the global level to the neglect of sporting activities at
the grass-root.

Mr.Okoro  gave the reason in an address he presented at the just
concluded 4th inter-house track and field competition of College of
Education,Nursery and Primary School which held at the College of
Education Demonstration Secondary School field in Warri on Friday
February 7,2014.

Mr.Okoro who was represented by the Chairman,sport Committee,Mr.Otete
Akpofure noted that inter-house sports events are very important to
the overall educational advancement of the children as well as sharpen
their psychomotor domain neccessary for the physical and mental
development.
While assuring the College Management of continued excellence in
academic and moral advancement of its pupils,Mr.Okoro said sports in
individual and national development prompted the school to ensure that
the inter-house sports event be taken seriously.

Declaring the event opened,Chairman of the event,Pastor(Engr.)
Madamiedor.O.L.John said stressed that importance of inter-sporting
activities cannot be over-emphasised.

Meanwhile, White House has emerged the over-all winner of this year's
inter-house sports competition with a total of about 188 points while
Pink,Blue and Green Houses emerged second,third and fourth positions
respectively with a total of 175,170 and 162 points.

Despite the directives handed down by the Delta South Senatorial
District of the Democratic Peoples Party,DPP, on the 26th of February
2013,that none of its members should identify with any other political
parties in the state without the consent/directives from the State
Executive Exco ably led by Chief Tony Ezeagu,the erstwhile Chairman of
DPP Okumagba II Ward 12,Mr.Otome Dolor and his cohorts,Azaka Ese and
Simon Ejiro have allegedly joined the All Progressives Congress,APC.

the ongoing APC registration exercise on Sunday February 9,2014,at the
compound of late Pa.Dolor at 47 Emebiren Street,Okummagba
Layout,Warri,reports that Otome Dolor and Co are making the public and
Peoples' General,Great Ovedje Ogboru believe that they are still in
the Ogboru fold even though the 2011governorship aspirant of the DPP
in Delta State has moved to the Labour Party with his faithful
loyalists.

The idea of Mr.Otome Dolor and Co which did not go down well with many
of Ogboru's teeming supporters Our Correspondent gathered is causing
real tensin within the area. A die-hard Ogboru supporter who does not
want his name in print said described the moves of Otome Dolor and Co
to the APC as a ploy to truncate the political moves of Chief Great
Ogboru at the grass-root level.

In a swift reaction via telephone,Chief Tony Ezeagu described such
acts by politicians at the grass-root level as "prostitution and
wickedness". He denied the allegations making the rounds that Chief
Ogboru decamped to the APC noting that it is the Labour Party he moved
to adding that he still retains his position in the party as its State
Chairman. Chief Ezeagu called on party faithfuls remain steadfast and
keep far from political prostitutes as the 2015 general elections draw
near.

LEADERSHIP: UGBORHEN COMMUNITY GETS NEW PRESIDENT

The Ugborhen Community in Sapele Local Government Council of Delta State today,Monday 10^th February,2014 witnessed a landmark event when Chief Anthony Ayovoghwarhe Amitaye emerged as the Community’s             President in a keenly contested election conducted by the Community’s Council of Elders and the Ohwoghara Quarter.Chief Amitaye polled 231 votes emerge the President.Three of the five persons who vied for the position of the Community’s President had earlier stepped down for him while he went to contest with two.Those who stepped down were Hon.{Dr.} Ladun Lawrence,Mr. Joseph Ikpen and Mr. Obaro Light.Messers Emmanuel Akpoyibo and Johnbull Odjegba had earlier pulled out of the election citing some irregularities in the process leading to the conduct of the election.Mr. Akpoyibo said for the election to be free and fair it should be conducted according to the provisions of the Community’s constitution especially sections 18, 19 and 20.Mr. Odjegba on his part alleged that the election register had been manipulated in an undisclosed hotel in Sapele. He sees this act as a ploy to rig the election for Chief Amitaye. The Ugborhen Community which has four quarters namely; Owhokpoghor, Owhikorho,Udumugbaku and Owhogharha has conducted elections/selections for the various position apart from the Position of the President in the community.

Chairman of Elders Forum,Pa. Jacob Ikpekpe while presenting Chief Anthony Amitaye to the people of the community, urged him to greater heights.

Chief Amitayewalked through the centre of the Community to the Town Hall,centre of the epoch making event,and to his father’s compound amidst fanfare stormed the Ugborhen Primary School where he promised to place the best perfoming pupils on scholarship.This, he said, is his contribution towards the development of education in the community.He,therefore, urged the pupils to be serious with their studies.

In a chat with media men present at the event,Chief Amitaye said as part of his agenda for the development of the area his administration would connect the community with the various GSM Networks and at the same time make the empowerment of Youths in the community a priority.He also appaeled to the State Government to separate Ugborhen Primary School and Ugborhen Secondary School who share one compound for improved learning process for the pupils and students of both institutions.He also promised to work with all those who indicated interest in the position of the Community’s President for the betterment of all.He urged those who felt aggrieved to unite with him for the progress of the community.
